Alamo Plaza Interpretive Master Plan

Revealing a History 

 The Alamo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site embedded in the dense urban fabric of a growing San Antonio. This Interpretive and Public Realm Master Plan pedestrianizes the plaza and defines a distinct historic site within it, providing evocative spaces for education and discovery. Areas for historic interpretation are paired with sites for contemporary civic gathering and the kind of public expression places of such cultural significance attract. Our work for the Alamo Endowment with City of San Antonio and Texas General Land Office included intense public engagement leading to a unified plan that would make space for the many, complex and sometimes conflicting stories of the Alamo to be told.

Contested Histories 

Framed as a "Comprehensive Interpretive Plan" this project was as much about how the Alamo conveys its history as it was about urban design or historic preservation. Alamo history is held dear by diverse stakeholders and the stories each community tells of the Alamo are often in conflict. Our work focused on building space and interpretive frameworks for each community to have a voice and for multiple stories to co-exist. Public response was passionate and political. As the key spokespeople for the project, we were advocates for the landscape's role as a common ground and as a central protagonist in this living history.

A Vibrant Urban Plaza

To enable the phased development of the plaza and museum, we designed and implemented an initial phase of work along the southeast edge of the site. Pedestrianizing Crockett Street, shaping moments of shaded gathering, relocating monumental sculptural elements, and creating a safe drop off for students arriving by bus, the project initiates the transformation of the Alamo. A unique brick blend creates a robust and expressive surface treatment, where patterns shift to recall the history of agricultural fields and the route of the acequia which brought life-giving water to the mission.
