Set within the vast 18,000-acre Northwest Point Marine National Park on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, Amanyara is a secluded island retreat. Our work across a series of private villas reimagines landscapes once rigidly defined by the resort’s architectural language, with a singular and immersive approach.
The landscape identity is transformed through the restoration of native Tropical Savanna ecology. Memorable encounters with indigenous plant communities, evocative expressions of water, locally crafted stone and timber, and movement along clear, coherent paths work together to re-contextualize the villas within their natural setting.
Freed from the constraints of architectural order, the new landscape celebrates the island’s ecology while fostering the spirit of wellness and mindfulness embraced by Amanyara’s villa owners and guests.
Arrival at Amanyara is characterized by a winding drive of chalky gravel through low hills and low-growing indigenous vegetation to secluded parking courts at the perimeters of each villa. Limestone walls and shade salas mark a transition from the wild, untamed landscape into lush and curated gardens fit with terrazzo paving and wood decking. Guest pavilions, where large sliding doors blur the line between interior and exterior spaces, grant a sense of living in the garden. Diversely scaled communal garden areas draw guests together — around the pool, in the hot tub, at the fire pit, or on one of several generously furnished terraces and patios.
To ensure the quality of the construction and to evoke the people and character of Providenciales, we worked closely with tradespeople and craftspeople responsible for constructing the landscape. Details of masonry and paving were adapted to the familiar approaches of the installers. Color-coded planting plans with pictures of plant leaves were created to help bridge languages of English, Spanish, and Hatian Creole. Together we found a way of working that embraced local knowledge of plants and construction, the installer's approach to craft and economy, and a shared commitment to enduring stewardship of the villa gardens.
